Zelenskyy Warns Russian Airspace Could Remain Unsafe for Civil Aviation Amid Drone Activity

Kathmandu: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Russian airspace could remain unsafe for civil aviation as long as the war continues due to increased Ukrainian drone activity.

Addressing the nation on Tuesday night, Zelenskyy urged airlines operating in Russian airspace, insurance companies and authorities responsible for major airports to remain alert to the potential risks.

Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine does not target civilian aircraft, but warned that increased drone activity over Russian territory could have an impact on civil aviation. In recent months, Ukrainian drone operations have repeatedly disrupted air services at several Russian airports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin objected to Zelenskyy’s remarks, describing them as a declaration of “state terrorism.” He indicated that although efforts were continuing to hold talks with Ukraine, such circumstances could make negotiations more difficult.

Meanwhile, long-range missile and drone attacks between Russia and Ukraine have intensified in recent months. At least 12 people were reportedly killed in the latest Russian missile and drone attacks in Kyiv and surrounding areas.

Russia has increased its use of ballistic missiles, while Ukraine has said it is facing shortages of equipment needed for air defence. In response, Ukraine has intensified drone attacks targeting infrastructure, ports and other facilities inside Russia.

Putin acknowledged that Ukrainian attacks had caused damage to some civilian infrastructure and oil refineries in Russia. However, he claimed that Russian forces were increasing the pace of their military operations along the front lines.

Zelenskyy, meanwhile, indicated that Ukraine could suspend drone operations for a certain period and in specific areas if necessary to support diplomatic efforts.

Diplomatic efforts mediated by the United States to end the Russia-Ukraine war have so far failed to produce a concrete breakthrough.
