Kathmandu, Sept 5: CPN (UML) general secretary Shankar Pokhrel has called for compensation for Nepal from those countries responsible for the climate crisis.
Speaking at an event hosted by the UML Special Organization Committee at the party office in Chyasal, he emphasized that Nepal, as a Himalayan nation, deserves reparations from the industrialized countries that significantly contribute to climate change.
His statement comes in the wake of the devastating flashflood in the Bhotekoshi river and the Trishuli river system on August 26, caused by a massive glacier-rock fall in the Langtang mountain on the Chinese side of the Nepal-China border. It is believed that the glacier collapsed due to its melting because of the impact of global warming.
“Developed nations are ramping up carbon emissions through massive industries which is affecting our environment.
Meanwhile, developing countries like Nepal are bearing the brunt of these changes,” Pokhrel said. He highlighted that Nepal faces substantial financial losses each year due to these environmental shifts.
Leader Pokhrel noted that party leaders and community organizations have been actively engaged in the flood-affected areas, prioritizing rescue efforts and the distribution of relief supplies.(RSS)
