Bhotekoshi flood affects 55 drinking water projects in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha

Kathmandu, Sept 6: The recent flood in the Bhotekoshi River has severely impacted 55 drinking water projects across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha, with estimated damages amounting to Rs 640 million.

Nuwakot has been identified as the most affected area, suffering losses of Rs 41 million across 22 projects. The Water Supply and Sewerage Management Department is actively assessing the extent of the damage, with ongoing efforts to restore water supply services.

In response to the crisis, the department has developed both short-term and long-term strategies to ensure immediate access to drinking water for affected communities. This includes the deployment of a 100 KVA diesel generator to support the Bidur Water Supply Project, enabling the distribution of approximately five lakh liters of water daily.

Additionally, seven pumps have been installed to restore service to around 500 households in the Battar area. Water supply efforts are being coordinated with Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepni Limited (KUKL), utilizing tankers to reach various settlements.

To further enhance water supply capabilities, the department has prepared essential materials, including pumps and HDPE pipes, for service expansion to other flood-impacted areas such as Trishuli Bazaar and Belkotgarhi.

Technical teams are on the ground to repair and restore damaged infrastructure, while long-term restoration plans will be developed once comprehensive damage assessments are completed.

The department emphasizes the importance of both immediate relief and sustainable recovery efforts to prevent future water shortages. #rss
