Bhote Koshi flood: Rs 100 billion needed for social sector recovery alone

Kathmandu, Sept 11: The Bhotekoshi flash flood has caused an estimated loss amounting to Rs 67.87 billion in social sector alone. Approximately it requires Rs 103.54 billion for the recovery.

According to the ‘Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA) report’ jointly prepared by the National Planning Commission and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the flood destroyed 7,570 private houses.

While assessing the houses and the property inside them, the damage amounts to over Rs 63.88 billion. It is estimated that Rs 95.83 billion will be needed for their reconstruction.

The flood also damaged 48 public buildings, of which 35 were completely destroyed and 13 were partially damaged.

The damage amounts to over Rs 2.64 billion based on the valuation of the buildings and their contents. Reconstruction is estimated to require Rs 4.23 billion.

According to the report, 18 schools were affected by the flood, 11 completely and seven partially. The total damage to buildings and other property amounts to Rs 937 million while Rs 2.34 billion will be needed for restoration. Seven buildings that provide health services have been affected.

Among them, four have been completely destroyed, while three have suffered partial damage. The damage in the sector amounts to Rs 236.6 million, and Rs 780 million is needed for reconstruction.

Rs 365.9 million needed for restoration of cultural heritages

According to the Authority, cultural heritage has also been impacted. A preliminary study has shown that there are 30 cultural and religious sites, amounting to Rs 147.7 million.

The report states that Rs 365.9 million is required for the restoration of this area. In the social sector, private and public buildings and structures have been damaged.

Among them, 26.9% of private buildings (RCC and other types) have been affected. In terms of value, the damage to these buildings accounts for 73.4%.

Similarly, buildings made of cement make up 42.5 percent of the affected area. In terms of value, this is 20.8 percent. Among the affected, buildings made of mud account for 30.6 percent, which corresponds to 5.8 percent in value.

Although affected customs office buildings are 4.2 percent due to the flood, in terms of value, they make up 35.4 percent.

Likewise, the funeral sites account for 16.7 percent, resulting in a 4.6 percent loss in value.

Religious places make up 12.5 percent of the affected structures, while in terms of value, the loss is 6.5 percent.

Police outpost structures constitute 10.4 percent among the affected due to flooding, which is 11.3 percent in terms of value.
Government office buildings account for 12.5 percent, which is 8.8 percent in value. Similarly, health buildings make up 8.3 percent, representing 5 percent in terms of value.

Affected structures of the Nepali Army account for 4.2 percent, which is 5.9 percent in value. Prison buildings account for a total of 4.2 percent, with a 5 percent loss in value.

Among the affected, Covered Hall accounts for 4.2 percent, which is 2.8 percent in terms of value. Due to the flood, 4.2 percent of the affected structures are related to sports, which amounts to 1.4 percent in value. The senior citizens’ building makes up 2.1 percent of the affected structures, with a value share of 5.1 percent.

According to the Authority, the meeting hall accounts for 2.1 percent of the affected buildings, which is 0.6 percent in value.

The government bank building constitutes 2.1 percent of the affected structures, translating to 1.4 percent in value. Community buildings make up 2.1 percent of the affected structures and 3.6 percent in terms of value. #rss
