Kathmandu: The Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) has signed an agreement with the Nepali Army to supply 10,251 litres of processed milk daily, marking a major step towards strengthening the state-owned dairy institution’s domestic market.

The agreement was signed between DDC General Manager Dr Sharan Kumar Pandey and Brigadier General Sanjay Kumar Ranjit of the Nepali Army’s Directorate of Supply and Transport. Under the agreement, the Army will purchase milk and various dairy products, including yoghurt, paneer, milk powder and cheese, from DDC.

In addition to 10,251 litres of milk daily, the Army will purchase 365 litres of yoghurt, 37 kilograms of paneer, 21 kilograms of milk powder and 15 kilograms of cheese every day.

The agreement will come into effect from January 15, according to DDC General Manager Pandey.

“The agreement to supply around 10,000 litres of milk daily to Army barracks is a significant achievement for DDC,” Pandey said. “We will immediately increase the volume of milk procured from farmers to fulfil the agreement.”

According to Pandey, DDC currently collects around 70,000 litres of milk daily from farmers across the country. The corporation plans to increase the daily collection by another 40,000 litres immediately after the Dashain festival.

“We will purchase more than 100,000 litres of milk daily from farmers after Dashain,” he said.

Pandey also said that DDC has cleared its outstanding payments to farmers. The agreement with the Nepali Army will cover the supply of milk and dairy products to Army barracks across 32 districts.

DDC Expands Dairy Exports

Pandey, who also serves as a joint secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, said DDC has started exporting ghee to Dubai and yak cheese to Thailand since he assumed the position of general manager.

The corporation is also preparing to export ghee to Japan and South Korea in the near future.

“We have adopted several strategies to strengthen the domestic market, as our focus should not be limited to exports alone,” Pandey said.

The agreement with the Nepali Army is expected to provide DDC with a stable institutional market while creating opportunities to increase milk procurement from farmers and support the domestic dairy sector.
