Kathmandu: Gagan Kumar Thapa, a candidate for the presidency of the Nepali Congress, has appealed to voters for their support while meeting delegates waiting in line to cast their ballots.
The party’s central working committee had decided in October last year to hold its 15th General Convention in November. However, after delays in the convention process, Thapa emerged as party president through a special general convention, pledging to bring the party back on track in accordance with its statute and democratic principles.
Under his leadership, the party contested the House of Representatives election held on February 21 this year. Thapa has also moved forward with the party’s convention process within the prescribed timeframe, emphasizing adherence to the party statute.
Delegates appeared enthusiastic as Thapa approached them and sought their votes.
Thapa is competing for the party presidency against Shyam Krishna Khadgi of Kathmandu-6, who is contesting for a position on the Central Working Committee for the first time.
Thapa, a long-time figure in Nepali Congress politics, previously secured the highest number of votes when he was first elected to the Central Working Committee. He has also served as the party’s general secretary.
Following the Gen Z movement, Thapa has advocated changes in party policies to make them more responsive to changing social realities. He played a leading role in organizing the special general convention that brought him to the party’s leadership.
Earlier on Friday, Thapa posted a message on social media urging delegates to vote freely and without pressure or outside influence. He also stated that no factions had been formed and called on voters to exercise their independent judgment.
The presidential contest is taking place as the Nepali Congress seeks to move forward with its organizational process and leadership selection under the party statute.
